Farmers Insurance Open: Top 10 power rankings at Torrey Pines
Brace yourselves for the onslaught of Farmers Insurance commercials featuring brand spokesman, Rickie Fowler. Maybe they’ll be funny for the first time. Or even the second.
But come Sunday afternoon, inevitably enough will be enough.
Rickie Fowler, the golfer, is hopeful to also be around Sunday. After an auspicious start to his career at the Farmers Insurance Open, Fowler’s missed three of his last four cuts and finished T-66 a year ago (73-66-74-74).
The Murrieta, California, native grew up about 60 miles north of Torrey Pines. The North and South Courses felt like home early on. He recorded a T-5 in 2010 (67-70-70-70), T-20 in 2011 (65-71-73-74), T-13 in 2012 (68-70-71-70) and T-6 in 2013 (77-65-70-68).
The 31-year-old is coming off a T-10 last week at the American Express. Fowler co-led after 36 holes thanks to a career-best 15-under start. He couldn’t keep it going and dropped to T-10.
It was his third straight top-10 and fifth straight top-20, albeit four of those events had limited fields. This was Fowler’s second start of 2020 as he finished T-5 at the Tournament of Champions.
Fowler is one of the more well-rounded players on Tour and can post scores on any course. He has the distance off the tee (30th, 303.1) to compete at Torrey. The putting is also there (13th SG, .541), and he’s familiar with these types of greens.
It’s been nearly a year since Fowler’s last win at the Phoenix Open, which is next on his schedule. Look for him to get back in the winner’s circle soon.
