Fantasy Golf: Waste Management Phoenix Open Player Picks
By Hans Geevers
The PGA Tour presents fantasy golf fans with the Waste Management Phoenix Open!
Before I discuss my Draftkings and fantasy golf player picks let’s take a quick look at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the golf course, and the key statistics that I will be focusing on for this week’s event.
The Waste Management Phoenix Open will be played at TPC Scottsdale. This course is a par 71 that measures 7,266 yards. This course appears to favor the golfer that pounds the golf ball off the tee and finds a high number of greens in regulation. This tournament has been played at TPC Scottsdale every year since 1987. It should be noted that the course did have upgrades in 2014. The course upgrades added length and strategically placed bunkers to make the course more difficult.
The key statistics that I am focused on for this week’s tournament are strokes gained approach, strokes gained tee to green, GIR (greens in regulation) and driving distance.
Here are my Draftkings/fantasy golf player selections for the 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open!
Webb Simpson $10,300
The 34-year-old American has been playing some outstanding golf in the current PGA Tour season that began in September of 2019. How well you may ask? Well, let’s take a look at his results since October 2019 to provide some clarity to my previous statement. Simpson finished seventh at the Shriners Hospitals For Children Open in October, finished second at the RSM Classic in November, finished tenth at the Hero World Challenge in December, and he finished third at the Sony Open in Hawaii earlier this month.

Simpson also checks the box for me when it comes to statistics. More specifically, Simpson currently ranks fifth in GIR (greens in regulation-77.31%), first in scoring average (67.619), ninth in scoring tee to green (.089) and fifth in strokes gained approach (1.239) on the PGA Tour.
Let’s take a look at some of Simpson’s outstanding previous results at this week’s event. Here are Simpson’s best finishes at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in the last ten years: eighth-2011, eighth-2012, tenth-2014, 14th-2016, second-2017, and 20th in 2019.
Matt Kuchar $9,400
Kuchar arrives at this week’s event in Arizona on the heels of a win at the Singapore Open earlier this month. He also has outstanding previous event form at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. More specifically, Matt Kuchar has three consecutive top nine finishes at the Waste Phoenix Management Open, including a fourth-place result in 2019.
Branden Grace $8,700
He has not yet played on the PGA Tour in 2020. However, Grace has played two events on the European Tour this year. He won the South African Open three weeks ago. He followed up his first victory of 2020 with a 17th place finish at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. Grace also finished second at the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Russell Knox $7,700
He currently ranks 21st in GIR (greens in regulation) and 20th in strokes gained approach on the PGA Tour. Additionally, Knox finished 21st in last week’s Farmers Insurance Open.
Sebastian Cappelen $6,700
He has two consecutive top 21 finishes on the PGA Tour, including a sixth-place result at the American Express two weeks ago.
Those are my five Draftkings/fantasy golf player selections! If you use these players in your Draftkings lineup you will have $7,200 left to select your sixth and final golfer for your unique lineup! As always, good luck!
