Scott Piercy in Hot Water amidst posts, loses sponsorships
Scott Piercy found himself in hot water this week after posting an inappropriate meme on social media and has lost multiple sponsorships due to his actions.
When it comes to social media, you always need to think twice about what you post. Scott Piercy learned that recently, and it has cost him quite a lot.
Piercy posted a meme to his Instagram page in early March. He shared a homophobic meme directed at former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, as well as references to the far-right conspiracy theory QAnon.
Without getting into what the meme was (definitely not appropriate to post, much less talk about), it cost Scott Piercy more than just some followers and a hit to his public image.

He used to have deals with a few companies, and some big-name ones at that. After he shared the meme, both Titleist and Footjoy announced that they were immediately ending the deals that they had with Piercy. They weren’t the only ones to do it, as apparel company J.Lindeberg dropped him as well.
It’s a big hit to the longtime pro Piercy who has been playing on Tour since the start of the millennia. He had actually been playing well in recent years as well. He was 39th last year in FedEx Cup points and had made the cut in 10 of 11 events this year, even finishing in the top-20 in three straight events.
It will be a story to keep an eye on throughout the remainder of the 2019-20 PGA Tour season. Piercy is into his 40’s, which is normally when players start going downhill a bit and get ready for the transition to the Champions Tour. Piercy has won once since 2016, taking the Zurich in 2018. Chances are he is going to be heckled more than the average golfer the remainder of the year, and getting any sponsorships going forward is going to be a challenge.
He’s currently playing at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He shot an opening-round 71 and finds himself T-28th at the time of this article. He will tee off at 12:21 PM Eastern time.
A reminder to everyone out there. Be careful of what you post, and always take a minute to think about the appropriateness of what it is you are posting.
