During the current standstill of the PGA Tour, let’s check-in and see where the golfers sit in the FedEx Cup Standings.

For a long time at the beginning of the 2019-20 PGA Tour season, Justin Thomas sat atop the leaderboard. He led the FedEx Cup Standings for months.

Not anymore.

Thanks to his hot stretch to finish out the recent tournaments, Sungjae Im is actually the current leader in the standings. After winning the Honda Classic, he always made it back-to-back wins, finishing 3rd at the Arnold Palmer.

Justin Thomas is still there though and is right on his heels. At only 55 points back, Thomas isn’t going anywhere soon and is going to be near the top of the FedEx Cup Standings throughout the rest of the year, regardless of if we have golf or not.

One of the things that I love about the FedEx Cup Standings is the fair mix of wins counting for a lot (500-600 points), and a player being able to play strongly throughout the year without a win, and still find his way into the top ten.

Take Hideki Matsuyama.

Matsuyama is currently in 10th place and has made it there without a win this year. It’s quite an accomplishment. Only four of the top 20 players have made it there without a win, and Matsuyama is at the top of that small group. Rounding out his no-win group is Xander Schauffele in 12th, Bryson DeChambeau in 16th, and Scottie Scheffler in 19th.

None of those names should surprise you, as they have all been playing fantastically consistent golf this year, finishing near the top of the leaderboard multiple times. Any tournament that you turn in to, it seems like, at some point over the weekend, you are going to see their names in contention.

Then you have the players who took advantage of some of the talent deprived fields, earning points that were ripe for the taking. As long as it is a main tournament, you are getting 500 points. Brendon Todd took advantage to be sure, winning two events this year, earning 1,000 points from just those events alone. He finds himself in 4th (1,110) in the FedEx Cup Standings and is likely going to ride that all the way to the Tour Championship.

For reference, 1,242 points were the final score of the 31st ranked golfer. That’s including the first two playoff events. Todd is about guaranteed to make it there, as long as he doesn’t miss the cut at every event he plays in.

Golf can’t come back soon enough. For now, the FedEx Cup standings are going to stay the way they currently are until we start to see some golf played again. Until then, stay safe and stay healthy everyone.
