Thomas is off to a fantastic start so far in the 2020 season. He has played in just eight tournaments and already has two wins. The Louisville, Kentucky, native claimed the title at the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges in October, then won the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii in January.
In addition to his two victories, the 2017 PGA Tour Player of the Year also tied for third at this year’s Waste Management Phoenix Open and tied for fourth at the Safeway Open. As if that weren’t enough, Thomas tied for fifth at the Hero World Challenge in December and tied for sixth at the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship in February.
Thomas has obviously proven that he can win the FedEx Cup, having claimed the 2017 crown (and healthy check that goes with it). But he hasn’t been a one-hit wonder in the playoffs. In 2016, he was 12th, followed by his win in 2017. Since then he placed seventh in 2018 and third last season. It would seem that the playoffs fit Thomas’ game, and his game fits the playoffs.
The more Thomas plays on tour, the more it appears that he can be the future of golf. For a while, it appeared that Thomas’ good friend Jordan Spieth would be that player. But if recent results are indication, it will be Spieth chasing Thomas rather than the other way around.
What might be the scariest thing about Thomas is that he has room to get even better. As he gains experience and learns more about just what he can do with his game, he can become an even better player.
Despite playing just more than half of the events of FedEx Cup leader Sungjae Im, Thomas finds himself in second place in the playoff standings. There is absolutely no doubt that he’s a contender for the FedEx Cup once again this season. Seeing him hold the trophy at the end of the year would be no surprise.
