Rory McIlroy is one of the best players in the game and he will be in contention to win the FedEx Cup again this season. Find out where he stands at this point.

Rory McIlroy is one of just two players to win the FedEx Cup more than once since it came into existence in 2007. The other, of course, is Tiger Woods.

McIlroy won his first FedEx Cup in 2016, then won it again last season after his triumph at the Tour Championship. That was one of three wins for McIlroy last season, tied with Brooks Koepka for the most on tour in 2019.

As would be expected, McIlroy is off to a fast start in the 2020 season. He has only played in six events so far this season, but he has made the cut in all six tournaments.

McIlroy, who is currently number one in the Official World Golf Rankings, has been on fire in the six events in which he has played. He has finished in the top five in all six events, and the top three on three occasions. He earned his 18th win on the PGA Tour when he claimed the title at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in November.

McIlroy currently sits in third place in this year’s FedEx Cup standings. He’s currently 279 points behind current leader Sungjae Im and 224 points behind second place Justin Thomas. The only reason McIlroy trails at this point is because he has played in just six tournaments so far this season, while Im has played in 14 and Thomas has played in eight.

The four-time major champion will also have a shot to complete the career grand slam this year. McIlroy has won the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open and the Open Championship, but has yet to win the Masters. If that event is played, in November, McIlroy could complete that feat this season as well.

There’s very little doubt that the 30-year-old McIlroy will be in the mix when the FedEx Cup is decided this season. He, like every other player, will have to adjust to whatever schedule the PGA Tour sets forth once the coronavirus quarantine is over. But simply looking at McIlroy’s track record, one would have little trouble at believing that he’ll be one of the contenders when the top 30 players play in this year’s Tour Championship.
