Webb Simpson: Is PGA Veteran a FedEx Cup Contender or Pretender?
By Tim Letcher
Webb Simpson is a player who always seems to fly beneath the radar on the PGA Tour. This despite the fact that Simpson has won six times on the Tour, including a couple of huge victories.
Simpson first came to the attention of the nation in 2012 when he shot a 68 on Sunday to win the U.S. Open at The Olympic Club in San Francisco. Simpson earned a one-shot win over Graeme McDowell and Michael Thompson.

Then in 2018, Simpson took home the title from the Players Championship after a second-round 63 gave him a big lead on Friday. Simpson would cruise home with a four-shot victory over perhaps the best field in all of golf.
None of this should come as a surprise, yet when it comes to Simpson, experts continue to overlook him. The South Carolina native has established himself as one of the top players in the world and is currently ranked ninth in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Simpson has also had quite a bit of success in the FedEx Cup playoffs. In 2011, he won the Wyndham Championship, then just two weeks later won the Deutsche Bank Classic to jump to the top of the playoff standings. Ultimately, he finished third, but it was a strong showing for his first real trip to the playoffs.
Since then, Simpson has finished in the top 25 in the FedEx Cup standings six times, including an 11th-place finish in 2018. Simpson’s consistency and ability to compete in the playoffs has made him a force in the PGA Tour’s playoff system.
This season, Simpson has gotten off to a very solid start. He has made the cut in all five events that he has entered, including four top 10 finishes.
Included in those finishes are a win (Waste Management Phoenix Open), a second place (RSM Classic) and a third place (Sony Open). Simpson also tied for seventh at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in October.
His worst finish so far this season was his last outing, when he placed in a tie for 61st at the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship in February. But that is the outlier so far in what has been a solid season.
Due to his past performances and his hot start to this season, Simpson is definitely a contender for the 2020 FedEx Cup. And if he wins, maybe the experts will finally take notice.
