Tyrrell Hatton: FedEx Cup Contender or Pretender?
By Tim Letcher
Despite playing in just four events so far this season, Tyrrell Hatton is in the mix for the FedEx Cup. Can he win?
Tyrrell Hatton has quietly become a regular major championship contender and, as such, has also found himself having quite a bit of success in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Since he began playing primarily on the PGA Tour, he has continued his ascent up the FedEx Cup standings.
Hatton’s first real season on the PGA Tour was in 2018, after he had primarily played in Europe for the five previous seasons. During that 2018 campaign, Hatton notched a third-place finish in the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship, his best finish of the season. He had four top 10s and seven top 25s in 16 starts that season. He finished 54th in the FedEx Cup standings that season.

Last season was not quite as good for Hatton. In 17 starts, he had only three top 10 finishes, with nothing better than his tie for sixth at the Open Championship. He made the FedEx Cup playoffs, but faltered early and finished just 79th in the standings.
The 2020 season is off to a much more promising start for the Englishman. He has made just four starts, but has been in the top 20 all four times. His worst finish so far is a tie for 14th at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in November. He also has a pair of sixth-place finishes in 2020. The first came at the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges in October, and the second came at the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship in February.
The highlight of Hatton’s season thus far is his first career PGA Tour victory, which came in March at the Arnold Palmer Invitational when Hatton held off Marc Leishman by a shot. It was his fifth worldwide win, but his first on American soil.
Hatton now finds himself in 14th place in the current FedEx Cup standings despite playing in just four events. It’s much higher than he has ever been in the same standings and it would seem that Hatton is in unchartered waters. However, he is a proven player with quite a bit of international experience who has shown that he can compete against the world’s best players.
The delayed season could work in Hatton’s favor because he doesn’t play in a large volume of events. And if he can continue his hot streak from before play was halted, there’s no reason that Hatton can’t be a contender for this year’s FedEx Cup.
