Bubba Watson: Revised Schedule Should Help Lefty
By Tim Letcher
Bubba Watson has to like the revised PGA Tour schedule. It fits his eye very well, which could boost his FedEx Cup chances.
During his time on the PGA Tour, Bubba Watson has been the ultimate “horse for the course” player. Meaning, if Watson likes the course and it fits his eye, he excels. If the course is not one of his favorites or doesn’t suit him, Watson has seen his share of struggles.
Watson has won 12 times on the PGA Tour. Seven of his 12 victories have come in three tournaments. The left-hander has won three times at the Travelers Championship, twice at the Masters and twice at the Northern Trust Open.

That scenario is one of good news and bad news for Watson each season. When the tournaments he enjoys are being played, Watson can compete with anyone. When it’s one of the other tournaments, he is less than his best.
With the PGA Tour schedule being shuffled this season due to the coronavirus and the resulting effects, Watson will actually have an advantage. If the tour can stick with the schedule that was released earlier in April, there will be a number of spots that are favorable to Watson right out of the gate.
The third tournament as the tour resumes is the Travelers Championship, where Watson is a three-time champion. Watson could certainly make up some ground in the Ryder Cup and FedEx Cup standings that week.
Two weeks later, the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois, will take place. Watson last played in the Deere in 2017, finishing 44th that season.
Watson is currently 18th in the United States Ryder Cup standings and 62nd in the FedEx Cup standings. He has already played in some of his favorite events this season, finishing sixth at the Farmers Insurance and third at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Watson would need a big summer to make the U.S. Ryder Cup team, but he can make a run in the FedEx Cup with a fast start this summer.
