Jordan Spieth: What’s wrong and where has he been?
By Jay Wilhelm
Jordan Spieth’s struggles on the PGA Tour are two and a half years deep. With the 2020 season about to resume, we ask what is going on with him.
Jordan Spieth is a 2009 and 2011 U.S Amateur champ. Only him and Tiger Woods are two-time winners. So anytime you accomplish something with the likes of Tiger you are going to have massive expectations coming out of the gates.
Up until the past two years, Jordan Spieth was living up to those expectations. His first win came in 2013 at the John Deere Classic making him the fourth youngest PGA Tour winner. He was the first teenager to win a PGA Tour event since 1931. Spieth won Rookie of the Year in that 2013 season.
Fast forward two years and the phenom talk got louder as he won the 2015 Masters to capture his first major championship. He was a runner-up in the PGA Championship and capped off his season that year by winning the U.S Open.

Jordan walks out of the 2015 season as the PGA Tour player of the year, the leading money winner, and the FedEx Cup champion! He popped off a few wins in the 2016 season and then grabbed his third major title in 2017 as he won the Open Championship. Where has that guy gone?
A three-time major champ, 11 PGA Tour victories, 14 total wins as a pro, and spent 26 weeks as the world’s number one, all by 24 years old. July 23, 2017, was his last win and in that span of time, he has been completely ordinary and hasn’t really been in contention for wins in the last two and a half years. It’s well known he has been working on his swing and his putting the most as those have been issues during this stretch fundamentally.
Having watched his last few tournaments closely I have to think at this point it seems more mental than it does any flaw in his fundamentals. When it comes to the game of golf you can only put in so much work at the range and on practice rounds before you have to work on the mental part of the game, which at times is the most challenging part.
In other sports, it is you against your opponent or your team against the other team. In golf, it is not only you against the other golfers in the field, but you against the course. When this 2020 season gets moving again, the thing I believe Jordan Spieth needs to do to get back on track, get out of this drought, and back into the winner’s circle is easier said than done.
He needs to stop trying to fill those shoes from early on in his career and just be the best possible player he can be moving forward. If he can do that and stay consistent I have no doubts we will see this ultra talent back as one of the top golfers in the world.
