If Paul Casey is to continue his streak of making the Tour Championship, and is to make another Ryder Cup team, he will need to have a big summer.

Paul Casey faces a good news/bad news scenario when the PGA Tour resumes in June. The bad news for Casey is that the Valspar Championship has been canceled. Casey is the two-time defending champion at that event, which will not be played this season.

The good news for Casey is that he also has a very good record at the Travelers Championship, which will be played in late June this season. Casey was the runner up in the event in 2015 and 2018, tied for fifth last season and in 2017. It’s a course that clearly fits Casey’s game.

Casey has a lot at stake this season. He has made it through the FedEx Cup playoffs and into the Tour championship for five straight seasons. Last season was his best finish in the playoffs, as the veteran finished fifth overall. That tied his 2016 finishing placement.

Currently, Casey is 92nd in the FedEx Cup standings. He has made the cut in all seven of his 2020 events, but he has yet to finish in the top 10 in any event. His best finish was in his last outing, when he was 11th in the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship in February.

The Englishman also knows that he has a lot of ground to make up if he’s going to be on the European Ryder Cup team. He has made four Ryder Cup teams, earning his way onto the team in 2004, 2006, 2008 and, in the event’s last playing, in 2018.

However, Casey currently sits at 47th in the European Ryder Cup standings. That’s a lot of ground to make up and not much time in which to get enough points to make the team.

If Casey is to extend his streak of making the Tour Championship, and if he’s to make another Ryder Cup team, he will need a very big summer. A win at the Travelers Championship would go a long way on both fronts.
