Rickie Fowler Needs Big Summer to Keep Ryder Cup Streak Alive
By Tim Letcher
Rickie Fowler has been a part of the last three United States Ryder Cup teams. If he’s going to make it four in a row, he has some work to do.
Rickie Fowler has evolved during his decade on the PGA Tour. Fowler came to the tour as a youngster with a big game, although he might have been a bit immature and probably needed to be shown that he still had some work to do to be among the world’s best players.
Fowler has learned that lesson, and more, during his career. His development has made him among the best players on tour and someone who is seemingly always in contention in big events.

The California native has won five times on tour, including the Players Championship in 2015. Fowler also won the Deutsche Bank Championship that season, when he finished a career-high fourth in the FedEx Cup standings.
Fowler won last season at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, but the 2020 season has not been as kind thus far. Fowler has played in six events, making four cuts including a pair of top 10s. Fowler tied for fifth at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January and, two weeks later, tied for 10th at the American Express.
Since then, he has missed two cuts and made two. He tied for 37th while defending his title at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and he tied for 18th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Fowler needs a big summer for a couple of reasons. First, he needs to make a run in the FedEx Cup standings, where he currently ranks 94th.
Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Fowler is currently 14th in the United States Ryder Cup standings. That competition happens in September at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin and captain Steve Stricker would love if Fowler would make the team so he didn’t have to use one of his captain’s picks on him.
Fowler has played in the last three Ryder Cup competitions, and four overall. He has also been on the last three Presidents Cup teams. If he is to make it four straight Ryder Cups, Fowler is going to need a big summer.
