When the PGA Tour announced its new 2020 schedule, not many players could have been as excited as Zach Johnson. Find out why here.

Zach Johnson is a player who still gets largely overlooked, despite having had a tremendous career on the PGA Tour. Johnson is a two-time major champion and has won 12 times on tour, while making more than $45 million in prize money.

Yet the Iowa native is still underrated, especially with those credentials. Johnson has also had four top 10 finishes in the FedEx Cup standings during his career, although the last one was in 2015.

Johnson has slipped back a bit the last four seasons. He has finished 57th (2016), 48th (2017) and 58th (2018). Last season, Johnson did not make the FedEx Cup playoffs after his worst year on tour.

This season, Johnson has already played in 10 events, making six cuts in the process. His best finish so far in 2020 is a tie for 14th at the Sanderson Farms Championship in September. His only other top 25 finish this season came at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in November, where he tied for 23rd. He currently ranks 131st in the FedEx Cup standings.

The proposed PGA Tour schedule would seem to favor Johnson in the beginning. The first tournament out of the gates is scheduled to be the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial, a site where Johnson has won twice in the past. The following week is the RBC Heritage, a spot where Johnson has played well in the past, and where he finished 16th at Harbour Town Golf Links last season.

Just a few weeks later is the John Deere Classic, site of another Johnson victory, one that he earned in 2012. This tournament is one of Johnson’s favorites on tour, as it is played not far from his Iowa home.

It’s not likely that the schedule could have set up any better for Johnson. If he can take advantage of the favorable early schedule, he can get himself into a better spot for the FedEx Cup.
