Rory McIlroy: What he brings to TaylorMade Driving Relief event
By Tim Letcher
There will be a ton of talent on display at Sunday’s TaylorMade Driving Relief, but none better than world number one Rory McIlroy.
Let’s be honest – Rory McIlroy is the best golfer in the world right now. As he pairs with Dustin Johnson in this weekend’s TaylorMade Driving Relief, McIlroy seems to be ready for the challenge that lies ahead.
McIlroy has been ranked at the top of the Official World Golf Rankings for over 100 weeks, and he fully deserves to be ranked there. There’s not a hotter player in the world right now, and it’s really not very close.

How hot has McIlroy been this year? He has made six starts on the PGA Tour. He has been in the top five in each of those six events. His worst finish is fifth place, which happened at the Genesis Invitational, at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship.
He earned his first victory of the season at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in November and tied for third in both the Zozo Championship and at the Farmers Insurance Open. Despite playing about half of the events of his fellow competitors, McIlroy is currently third in the FedEx Cup standings and leads the tour in top five finishes.
It seems like McIlroy has been around for a long time, and he has, turning pro in 2007 at the age of 18. Despite his veteran status, McIlroy is likely just hitting his prime, as he is currently just 31 years old. That’s a scary thought.
In Sunday’s match, which includes quite a bit of talent, McIlroy will clearly be the best player on the course. He and Johnson are clear favorites over their opposition, Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff.
That fact could work for or against McIlroy and Johnson. If Fowler and Wolff are able to grab an early lead, they could grab the momentum, making the favorites come from behind. Or, if the match is tight late, the underdogs won’t have anything to lose and could afford to take a gamble on a certain hole or a certain shot.
At any rate, McIlroy will showcase his significant talent in Sunday’s match and he should be fun to watch. Despite seeming to be serious most of the time, McIlroy has shown that he has a very good sense of humor. Hopefully, that will come through on the television broadcast.
McIlroy is the best player in the world and it shows. The world will get to watch his immense talent up close in Sunday’s match, which should be fun for golf fans everywhere.
