Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods set to face off on Sunday
By Tim Letcher
Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods are the featured players at this week’s “The Match: Champions for Charity.” A pair of NFL quarterbacks join the golf legends.
After seeing the TaylorMade Driving Relief event on Sunday, fans of golf will have another opportunity to see live golf this coming weekend, as Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning take on Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady in The Match: Champions for Charity.
This past Sunday, the golf world saw Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson take down Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff 11 holes to 7 in the event at Seminole Golf Club. In reality, the match turned into Fowler versus McIlroy, and there were some definite highlights in the round.

However, this weekend’s event is different because it’s not four professional golfers battling in a skins game. Instead, a pair of future NFL Hall of Fame quarterbacks, who have won eight Super Bowls between them, join two of the greatest golfers of all time.
The format for this Sunday’s event, which will be held at the Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida, will be different than the TaylorMade event. Woods, Manning, Mickelson and Brady will play a best ball on the front nine, then a modified alternate shot format on the back nine.
This event will raise money for COVID-19 relief, with the funding going to organizations like DirectRelief.org and the American Red Cross. Turner Sports, which will broadcast the event on TNT, has already made a significant donation to the cause, in what the foursome hopes is just the beginning.
In the TaylorMade event, there was a little bit of trash talking, mostly between McIlroy and Wolff. It’s a guarantee that there will be more trash talking in this event, with all four players known to be talkers on the course and/or on the field. If the players are wearing microphones and the audience can hear what they are saying, it should be a lot of fun.
The golf is not going to be as good, obviously, with two amateurs playing. But the team aspect will be fascinating, especially during the modified alternate shot portion of the event. On those nine holes, having a good partner will be crucial. The better amateur between Brady and Manning could be the difference on those nine holes.
Something else that will make the event interesting for the fans is the television lineup. TNT will have Brian Anderson has the host, with former Masters champion Trevor Immelman and NBA legend Charles Barkley serving as analysts. Justin Thomas and CBS’ Amanda Balionis will serve as on-course reporters.
It was great to have live golf back on television this past weekend. Now, with Mickelson and Woods ready to take the course, the interest will only get more intense.
