Trash talk was the definite winner at Sunday’s “The Match: Champions for Charity”

There was one thing for sure at Sunday’s “The Match: Champions for Charity” – that there would be plenty of trash talk. As expected, the players, and even others, did not disappoint when it came to the trash talk.

It actually started on the first tee, with actor Samuel L. Jackson doing the introductions. Jackson took aim at Tom Brady, saying that he shot a 106 last year in Memphis, then asking “why are old people always moving to Florida?”

Jackson didn’t spare Peyton Manning on the first tee either. Jackson said that Manning “has shot more commercials than I have movies.”

On the second hole, it was course commentator Justin Thomas taking aim at analyst Charles Barkley. As the players teed off, with a bush right in front of the tee box, Thomas asked Barkley “Chuck, Chuck you think you’re carrying that little shrub there when you’re playing from that back tee?”

Manning also took a shot at Barkley on the same hole. After hitting his second shot to the left side of the green, the NFL legend said “do what Charles would not do, that was my thinking there.”

Barkley joined the fun on the second hole, taking a jab at Phil Mickelson, who explained the shot he was about to play to Thomas. “Phil is like, everybody has an annoying friend. You ask him something simple and he gives you the brain surgery answer,” Barkley said.

On the third hole, as Mickelson and Tiger Woods were about to compete in the long drive competition, Mickelson talked about activating his calves to unleash a long drive. Tiger said “yes, ladies and gentlemen, this is what I have to listen to every time we play.”

Brady, who struggled mightily on the first few holes, took a shot at Barkley on the fourth hole. After Barkley said he would donate $50,000 if Brady just hit the green, the Tampa Bay quarterback said “Chuck, you got any swing tips for me?”

Perhaps the line of the day came from Woods on the fifth hole

Tiger was on the green and Mickelson was hitting from a sandy area with a six iron. Mickelson asked Tiger to mark his ball because it might be in his line. After rolling his eyes and chuckling, Woods said “you want me to use one of my U.S. Open medals?”

Brady struggled for much of the day, but he hit the shot of the match when he holed out for a birdie four on the seventh hole, just after Barkley was ribbing him. “Take a suck of that Chuck,” Brady said.

Thomas responded with “welcome to the match, TB.”

Even TNT play-by-play man Brian Anderson got in on the fun, saying “they went with Feeding America (as a charity) because feeding Charles was too expensive.”

When Manning missed a short putt on 14 to give Brady and Mickelson the hole, Brady quipped “Eli would have made that one.”

The match itself was tight and competitive, but the trash talk was the highlight of the day.
