Fabian Gomez is once again fighting to keep his PGA Tour card

PGA Tour players will begin their jockeying for FedEx Cup position as soon as the tour resumes in June. Among those who will need to make something happen is Argentina native Fabian Gomez.

As play gets underway at Colonial in two weeks, Gomez finds himself firmly on the bubble to make the playoffs. The top 125 players make it to the postseason and Gomez currently sits at 126.

Gomez turned pro in 2002 and made it to the Korn Ferry Tour in 2007. He finished 58th in his first season on the tour, then 70th the following season.

In 2009, Gomez got so close to earning his tour card, finishing 27th in the KFT standings. And the following season, he closed the deal, finishing 12th in the KFT standings to earn his PGA Tour card for the following season.

In 2011, Gomez made 16 cuts in 26 starts on the PGA Tour with a tie for seventh at the Puerto Rico open serving as his only top 10. He was 133rd in the FedEx Cup standings that season.

In 2012, Gomez went back to the KFT and earned his way back to the PGA Tour. The next season, Gomez made 23 starts, making 10 cuts and finishing 133rd in the FedEx Cup Standings.

Once again, in 2014, Gomez went back to the KFT and, once again, he earned his tour card back.

And in 2015, Gomez saw his fortunes change

Gomez won for the first time on tour that season, claiming the title at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis. It was one of two top 10 finishes for him that season, which saw him finish 64th in the FedEx Cup standings.

The next season, Gomez continued to see success on tour, as he earned another victory, this time at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He would finish a career-high 40th in the FedEx Cup standings that season.

In 2017, Gomez was forced to withdraw from the Quicken Loans National in July and did not compete the rest of the season. He finished 171st in the FedEx Cup Standings. After not qualifying for the playoffs in 2018, he went back to the KFT and, once again, earned his tour card.

He did the same thing in 2019 and now, in 2020, he finds himself just outside the cut line for the playoffs. Gomez has been in this position before and knows how to handle the pressure. That should help him down the stretch as the condensed schedule takes place this summer.
