Ian Poulter has a say in his PGA Tour fate this season

As we continue to look at the Bubble Boys on the PGA Tour, those who are on the bubble to make the FedEx Cup playoffs, we come to a very interesting figure in this discussion – Ian Poulter.

Poulter’s situation is different because, to this point, he has only played in five events this season. He has made the cut in all five but has not really contended to win any of them. His best finish this season is a tie for 13th at the Zozo Championship in October.

Poulter is probably best knows for his golf attire and for being a thorn in the side of the Americans at the Ryder Cup. On many occasions, Poulter has been a key figure in helping the European side win in the competition every two years.

The Englishman has never fully dedicated himself to the PGA Tour

Poulter still elects to play the European Tour when he can. The most events Poulter has ever played in a season in the U.S. is 20.

Poulter has won three times on the PGA Tour. He won at the 2010 World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship, at the 2012 World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions and at the 2018 Houston Open.

Despite those wins, Poulter has never really made any kind of run in the FedEx Cup playoffs. He has never made the Tour Championship, although he has come close three times. He was 31st in 2009, and finished 39th in both 2010 and 2012. Since then, his best finish was last season, when he finished 41st in the final standings.

Despite making all five cuts this season, Poulter currently finds himself in 128th place in the FedEx Cup standings. It will be interesting to see how the Englishman handles his schedule once the PGA Tour gets back underway next month.

Poulter could do one of two things. He could try to play in a bunch of tournaments and hope to rise in the standings that way. Or, he could be selective and play only in the events where he think he could compete and take the chance that he may or may not make it into the playoffs.

It’s really going to come down to scheduling. Poulter will definitely want to play some in Europe, but with no Open Championship being played this year, does that mean Poulter may not go across the pond as often?

Poulter’s schedule will be the determining factor of whether he makes the playoffs or not. If history holds true, expect to see Poulter, and his unique fashion sense, in the FedEx Cup playoffs this season.
