Abraham Ancer has seen his profile rise on the PGA Tour over the past three years. He’s on the cusp of another step. Can he win the FedEx Cup in 2020?

Among the players currently in the top 25 in the FedEx Cup standings, almost all of them could make a run at the cup title. If some of those PGA Tour pros made a run, it would be a surprise, and that includes Abraham Ancer.

The native of McAllen, Texas, currently sits 25th in the FedEx Cup standings. While he would have to make quite a climb to reach the top of the standings, Ancer has shown that he has the game to do just that.

Ancer turned pro in 2013 after a successful college career at Oklahoma. He played in four event on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2014, missing the cut all four times.

The 2015 season saw Ancer earn his first professional victory, as he claimed the title at the KFT’s Nova Scotia Open by making a 30-foot putt on the 72nd hole. Ancer would finish 11th on the KFT money list, earning his PGA Tour card for the following season.

However, his trip to the big tour was brutal, to say the least. Ancer made 19 starts that season and missed the cut 13 times. Ouch. He had only one top 25 finish all season and was forced to go back to the KFT the following season.

To Ancer’s credit, he went back to the KFT, made 24 starts and had 18 cuts made. He was sixth in the priority order on the KFT, automatically earning his way back to the PGA Tour in 2018.

The 2018 PGA Tour season was much kinder to Ancer

This time around, he made 30 tour starts and made the cut on 20 occasions. Ancer registered five top 10s including a tie for fourth at the Quicken Loans National and a solo fifth place finish at the RBC Canadian Open. Ancer would make the FedEx Cup playoffs, finishing in 60th place.

In 2019, Ancer made another leap forward in his career. He had four top 10s on the season, including a runner-up finish at the Northern Trust, where he was behind only Patrick Reed. Ancer would qualify for the Tour Championship for the first time in his career and would finish 21st in the FedEx Cup standings.

This season, Ancer has started 11 times and has made nine cuts and already has three top 10s. He recorded his second career runner-up finish this season at the American Express. He was also T4 at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions and was T8 at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Ancer currently sits 25th in the FedEx Cup standings.

Ancer has shown that he has the game to compete with anyone. However, his time for a FedEx Cup run is probably in the future at this point.
