PGA Tour: where we stand as the 2019-20 season resumes
By Tim Letcher
The PGA Tour is set to resume this week at Colonial. For those who have forgotten, here’s a look back at what has happened on the tour so far this season
After nearly three months without golf, the PGA Tour is set to return this week at Colonial. The Charles Schwab Challenge gets underway on Thursday with a field that includes all five of the world’s top five players. It will be the first “real” golf played since the Players Championship was halted after one round due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Now, the tour is ready to resume with a reworked schedule which begins in Fort Worth this week. It’s probably worth looking back to see where we are at this point in the schedule so that we have a refresher as the tour resumes.

The 2019-20 season started with a pair of first-time winners. Joaquin Niemann was the winner at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier. The following week, Sebastian Munoz was the champ at the Sanderson Farms Championship.
As the schedule moved forward, Lanto Griffin joined the list of first-time winners by claiming the title at the Houston Open in October. The following week, Justin Thomas won the title at the CJ Cup @ Nine Bridges. Just two weeks later, still in Japan, Tiger Woods won the title at the Zozo Championship, claiming his 82nd career PGA Tour title, which tied him with Sam Snead for the tour’s record for most victories in a career.
Brendon Todd won twice in the fall, claiming titles at the Bermuda Championship and the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Rory McIlory also claimed a title at the Worlf Golf Championships-HSBC Champions.
Patrick Reed was in the headlines for multiple reasons in December
The big story out of the Hero World Challenge in December was the Patrick Reed sand moving controversy, just another incident in Reed’s history. The following week, Reed was part of the United States team that topped the Internationals at the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne Golf Club.
As the calendar turned, Thomas was again, claiming the title at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Fast forward to February, where Nick Taylor claimed the crown at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, while Adam Scott won at the Genesis Invitational.
Viktor Hovland earned his first PGA Tour win at the Puerto Rico Open, while Reed won at the World Golf Championships-Mexico Champions.
Sungjae Im, the current FedEx Cup leader, won at the Honda Classic, while Tyrrell Hatton won at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The following week, the Players was canceled after one round, and that’s where we stand heading to Colonial to resume the season.
The schedule, from here, is very condensed and it will be a mad dash to the playoffs. The way 2020 has gone, it won’t be a surprise for someone other than who you would expect to claim the FedEx Cup. That remains to be seen. For now, let’s just enjoy the fact that real golf is back.
