Kevin Na won for the fourth time on the PGA Tour last season, claiming a four-shot win at the Charles Schwab Challenge. Can he do it again?

At last season’s Charles Schwab Challenge, Kevin Na had a spectacular week, winning for the first time at Colonial Country Club. In most cases, a defending champion on the PGA Tour would be seen as one of the favorites when returning to the same venue the following season.

However, there are a couple of factors working against Na in this event. First and foremost, last year’s victory was Na’s first win at the event.

Secondly, and perhaps more amazingly, there has not been a repeat winner at Colonial since 1953. That’s right, it has been 67 years since legendary Ben Hogan won in consecutive seasons at the event.

That’s the longest such stretch on the PGA Tour without a repeat winner. And that’s saying something because the tournament at Colonial has produced winners with some of the biggest names in golf history.

Jack Nicklaus couldn’t do it. Nor Arnold Palmer. Phil Mickelson – nope. Despite the greatness of these players, they were unable to repeat as champions at Colonial.

So what might seem like an advantage for Na is not much of an advantage at all

Also keep in mind that Na shot a sizzling 8-under par 62 in the second round last year. If not for that round, he might not have won by four shots, if at all.

However, Na did place fourth in the event in 2018 and 10th in 2015. So Na obviously has become comfortable at Hogan’s Alley. That definitely works in his favor this time around.

Na is currently 31st in the Official World Golf Rankings and has four PGA Tour victories during his career. Three of those wins have come in the last three seasons. In addition to his 2019 win at Colonial, Na also won the 2018 Military Tribute at The Greenbrier and he won the 2020 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. The 36-year-old seems to have settled into his game and has become a very solid player.

All of that being said, the fact that there has not been a repeat champion at Colonial in 67 years weighs heavily on the upcoming event. The likelihood of Na pulling off the repeat seems quite slim, especially since he will be facing a field that features the top five players in the world. Picking someone other than Na this week definitely seems like the way to go.
