PGA Tour: what should be expected from Webb Simpson this week?
By Tim Letcher
Webb Simpson has had mixed results at the Charles Schwab Challenge. As the PGA Tour resumes this week, what should be expected of Simpson?
Webb Simpson has a strange history with Colonial Country Club. As Simpson prepares for this week’s PGA Tour restart at the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial, it’s really hard to predict just what will happen. To paraphrase Forrest Gump, with Simpson at Colonial, you never know what you’re going to get.
When Simpson has been good at Colonial, he’s been very good. He was third in 2016 and fifth in 2017, a pair of sparkling finishes at Hogan’s Alley.

When he has not been as good, his results have been on the other end of the spectrum. Simpson missed the cut in 2009, 2010 and 2018.
So, which Simpson will show up this week in Fort Worth?
The guess here is that we will see the good Simpson, largely due to his play so far this season on the PGA Tour.
Simpson, who is currently seventh in the Official World Golf Rankings, has not played a lot this season but has played well in his limited appearances. He has made five starts, has made all five cuts and has recorded four top 10 finishes.
He opened his season at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, where he tied for seventh. He followed that with a runner-up finish at the RSM Classic.
As the calendar turned to 2020, Simpson continued his strong play. He was third at the Sony Open in Hawaii before earning his sixth PGA Tour victory, this one coming at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
In his last start before the coronavirus caused a break in the PGA Tour schedule, Simpson tied for 61st at the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship.
Simpson is currently fifth in the FedEx Cup standings and could easily make a run at that title if he stays hot. The fact that he has had a pair of strong performances at Colonial bodes well for his chances this week.
The one caveat is that Simpson will have to contend with a stellar field in this week’s tournament. Each of the world’s top five players are in the field this week, as well as 16 of the world’s top 20. That’s tough sledding for every player in the field this week.
That being said, it will be tough for Simpson to earn the victory this week. And, judging by past results, it’s hard to predict whether he will be in contention or not. But based on his 2020 season, expect to see Simpson’s name on the leaderboard all weekend.
