PGA Tour: is Jordan Spieth back, or is he just comfortable in Texas?
By Tim Letcher
For the second straight day at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Jordan Spieth shot a 5-under 65. Can he make a comeback on the PGA Tour?
Jordan Spieth has struggled on the PGA Tour over the past two-plus seasons. However, at this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge in his home state of Texas, Spieth is looking more like the player he was three seasons ago.
Spieth has shot consecutive rounds of 5-under par 65 and stands at 10-under par through 36 holes of the Schwab, the first tournament as the PGA Tour resumes its schedule after a three-month absence due to the coronavirus. Spieth, the winner of the 2016 event at Colonial Country Club, sits one shot behind leader Harold Varner III.

Spieth has won 11 times on the PGA Tour, including three major championship titles. However, he has not won on tour since claiming the title at the Open Championship in 2017. That’s a long drought for someone who won so much, so quickly.
Spieth has struggled with two areas of his game over the last couple of years. One, he has found fewer fairways than he did when he was winning often. And two, he has not putted nearly as well as he did earlier in his career. Those two factors have led to a winless stretch that’s about to be three years.
That is, unless Spieth can win this week
On Friday, Spieth got out of the gates quickly, recording a birdie on the 11th hole, his second hole of the day. He then birdied the 14th and 15th holes to get to three under on the day. His birdie on 18 gave him a 4-under par 31 on his first nine.
The back nine was much more of a roller coaster for Spieth. He birdied numbers one and two to get to six under par on his round. However, he followed that with a double bogey at three and a bogey at four to fall back to three under par.
Spieth would rally back with birdies and numbers five and six. Three consecutive pars finished his round, which left him with a 5-under par 65 for the second straight day.
Whether this is a resurgence in Spieth’s game or just the fact that he is very comfortable with Colonial remains to be seen. What cannot be argued is that it’s great to see Spieth, once the hottest young players in the game, back playing at a very high level once again. Golf fans everywhere will be hoping that this trend continues well past this week in Fort Worth.
