PGA Tour: Xander Schauffele sits atop star-studded field
By Tim Letcher
In a field that’s littered with 16 of the world’s top 20 players, Xander Schauffele is trying to claim a PGA Tour win at the Charles Schwab Challenge
In a Charles Schwab Challenge field that includes the world’s top five players, Xander Schauffele is trying to prove that he is every bit that player on the PGA Tour that anyone else in the world is. Currently ranked 12th in the world, Schauffele is trying to make a point this week that he’s got the game to be on top of the world.
Saturday did not appear to be a day that Schauffele would climb the leaderboard and eventually take the lead. His front nine was nothing particularly special. He birdied the par-5 first hole, but he bogeyed number four to drop back to even par on the day. He was able to birdie number seven and par out to log a 1-under par 34 on the front nine.

It was the back nine where Schauffele was able to rally. He birdied both number 10 and number 11 to move to 3-under par on his round. Schauffele birdied the 15th hole to move to 4-under par for his round and to take the lead. However, he suffered a bogey on the par-3 16th hole to fall back into a tie for the lead.
After a par on the 17th hole, Schauffele finished his day with a birdie on the par-4 18th hole to grab the lead at 13-under par. None of the other players on the course were able to match that score, giving Schauffele a one-shot lead with 18 holes to play.
Schauffele is in his fourth year on the PGA Tour and he has proven to be more than formidable
He has never finished lower than 15th in the FedEx Cup standings and has been part of the winning United States Presidents Cup team in 2019.
Schauffele has four PGA Tour wins in his career already. In 2017, he won at the Greenbrier Classic and at the Tour Championship, perhaps his most impressive win so far. In 2019, Schauffele won at the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions and as the Sentry Tournament of Champions.
If he is able to top this world class field on Sunday at Colonial Country Club in Forth Worth, Schauffele will put the world on notice that he is someone to be dealt with the rest of the season. And he will prove to himself yet again that he can compete with the very best players in the world. After all, they are the ones that will be chasing him in Sunday’s round.
