Winners and losers from the return of the PGA Tour at the Charles Schwab Challenge

Each week on the PGA Tour, there are winners and losers in each tournament. Starting this week, and continuing throughout the season, we will look at those who achieved and those who underachieved at each event. Here’s a look at the winners and losers from the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Winners

Daniel Berger – The eventual winner made a clutch birdie putt on the 72nd hole to get into a playoff, then won with a par on the first extra hole. Berger was consistent all week, with a 65, two 67s and a 66 and he ended up topping a field full of the world’s best players. The win pushes Berger to 11th in the FedEx Cup standings.

Collin Morikawa – Despite missing a potential winning putt on the 72nd hole and ultimately losing after a lipout in the playoff, this was a big week for Morikawa. He went toe-to-toe with the best players in the world and, frankly, should have won. This experience can only aid the 23-year-old moving forward as he looks for his second PGA Tour victory.

Bubba Watson – It had been a ho-hum kind of season for Watson until this week. The two-time Masters champion entered the week in 62nd place in the FedEx Cup standings but used a final round 65 to earn a top 10 finish at Colonial. With the Travelers Championship coming up soon, Watson could be poised to make a big jump in those FedEx Cup standings.

Sungjae Im – Many people did not realize that Im led the FedEx Cup standings heading into this week. And he will continue to hold that lead after finishing the Schwab at 11-under par. His consistent 66-69-67-67 allowed him to finish inside the top 25 and thus, hold on to the top spot in the standings.

Jason Kokrak – On a leaderboard filled with young stars and past major champions, there stood Kokrak, right in the middle of them. He used a 65 on Saturday and a 64 on Sunday to get into contention before coming up just short in the end. Kokrak was able to jump nearly 50 spots in the FedEx Cup standings this week.

Losers

Jon Rahm – The Spaniard entered the week as the second-ranked player in the world. He also had recorded a pair of top-five finishes in three starts at Colonial Country Club. However, Rahm shot 69-71 to miss the cut by two shots. He had plenty of time to prepare and came back to a course where he had previously succeeded, so this result is a big disappointment.

Dustin Johnson – When we last saw Johnson, he struggled at the TaylorMade Driving Relief event in May. It was evident that Johnson had not played in a while, and he had lots of issues with his game. That continued at Colonial, where Johnson made eight bogeys compared to six birdies. Not the struggles that would be expected from a top-five player in the world.

Webb Simpson – Another player who had experienced previous success at Colonial, Simpson figured to be in the mix this week. Instead, he opened with a 3-over par 73 on Thursday, putting him in a terrible spot. He rebounded with a 1-under par 69 on Friday but missed the cut by four shots. This was certainly not the result Simpson was hoping for this week.

Jason Day – The struggle continues for Day this season. He never got anything going this week, shooting 70-72 to miss the cut by four shots. Day made just three birdies in 36 holes at Colonial. And while he wasn’t awful otherwise, he just never had any momentum this week and failed to play the weekend for the fourth time in eight starts this season.

Rickie Fowler – Fowler looked really good in the TaylorMade Driving Relief event in May, but that did not carry over to this week. Fowler shot a 73 on Thursday followed by a 69 on Friday to miss the cut by four shots. To his credit, Fowler did wear a microphone during the week, giving fans an inside glimpse into his thought process. However, that obviously did not help his game this week.
