Jim Furyk has always enjoyed playing at the RBC Heritage on the PGA Tour. Can the two-time winner contend at Harbour Town again?

At the Charles Schwab Challenge, Tom Lehman drew a lot of attention for his first-round 65 at Colonial Country Club. However, Lehman didn’t make the cut, but former RBC Heritage champion Jim Furyk did. And now, he’s back at Harbour Town on the PGA Tour, a place where he has had much success over the years.

At Colonial, Furyk found himself in the top 25 until a disastrous Sunday dropped him off the leaderboard. On Thursday, Furyk shot a 3-under par 67, followed by a 1-under par 69 on Friday.

On Saturday, Furyk shot another 67 to put himself at 7-under par and though he was seven shots behind Xander Schauffele, it was surprising to see Furyk’s name that high on the leaderboard. However, a 4-over par 74 on Sunday dropped the former Ryder Cup captain out of contention.

Now 50 years of age, Furyk’s performance at Colonial was a surprise, largely due to the fact that he has only finished in the top three in an event once in the last four years. That came last season when he was second at the Players Championship, where he finished one shot behind Rory McIlroy. Other than that, it has been a lot of struggling for Furyk.

Do not forget that this is man who has had a great deal of success on the PGA Tour

Despite his looping swing, Furyk has won 17 times on the tour, including the 2003 U.S. Open. He also won the FedEx Cup in 2010, a season where he won three times on tour.

Now, Furyk returns to Harbour Town, where he has had great success over the years. During that 2010 season, one of Furyk’s three wins came at Harbour Town, where he topped Brian Davis in a playoff. Then, five years later, Furyk won in a playoff again, this time beating Kevin Kisner.

Furyk has also been runner-up at the RBC Heritage on two occasions. In 2006, he fell one shot short of Aaron Baddeley and in 2005, he was two shots shy of Peter Lonard.

Always known as a streaky player, can Furyk ride the momentum of this past week as he heads to South Carolina for this week’s event? And even if he can, will it be enough for Furyk to contend?

Facing a tough field for the second straight week, even in a friendly venue, will likely be too much for Furyk to overcome. Therefore, it’s not likely to see Furyk in contention for a second straight week.
