PGA Tour: Ian Poulter in the mix again at RBC Heritage
By Tim Letcher
Ian Poulter has contended at the RBC Heritage the last two seasons. Is this the year that the Englishman gets a long-awaited PGA Tour win at Harbour Town?
For Ian Poutler, the RBC Heritage has been the ultimate roller coaster event over the past two seasons on the PGA Tour. Poulter has seen the best of the best and the worst of the worst at Harbour Town Golf Links in South Carolina.
In 2018, Poulter played some spectacular golf, including a stretch of 47 straight holes without a bogey. He grabbed the 54-hole lead and was in position to earn his fourth PGA Tour victory.

However, Poulter faltered in the final round, shooting a 4-over par round of 75. In the process, he fell out of the lead and finished in a tie for seventh place.
Last season, Poulter found himself in contention at Harbour Town again
Through three rounds, the Englishman was just one shot behind leader Dustin Johnson with 18 holes to play. However, a 2-over par 73 dropped Poulter into a tie for 10th place and provided another disappointing finish.
In Thursday’s first round of the 2020 RBC Heritage, Poulter was at it again, jumping out early and establishing himself as a contender. He opened with a par, then birdied the par-5 second hole. After pars on three and four, he birdied the par-5 fifth hole to move to 2-under par. He would also birdie the ninth hole for a 3-under par 33 on the front nine.
On the back nine, Poulter continued his consistent play. He birdied the 11th hole to move to 4-under par. He would also birdie the 13th hole, going to 5-under par with five holes to play.
After three straight pars, Poulter closed his round with a flourish. He birdied the par-3 17th hole, then birdied the par-4 18th hole to shoot a 4-under par 31 on the back side. That left him with a 7-under par 64 for the round and in a tie for first with Mark Hubbard.
Poulter and Hubbard currently hold a one-shot lead over seven players, including Webb Simpson and Viktor Hovland. There are 15 players within two shots of the lead.
Getting off to a fast start has not been Poulter’s problem at Harbour Town in the past. It has been finishing that Poulter has struggled with at the RBC Heritage. The Englishman is hoping that this season is different.
At 44 years old, Poulter’s days of winning on the PGA Tour are probably coming to an end. However, he would love to add another victory while he can. And he’s in position to do that this week if he can finally find a way to close in a big way at Harbour Town.
