PGA Tour: Corey Conners in contention at RBC Heritage
By Tim Letcher
Corey Conners finds himself on the leaderboard at the RBC Heritage through 36 holes. Can he beat bigger names and get his second PGA Tour win?
Sitting at the top of the leaderboard at this week’s RBC Heritage are Webb Simpson, followed by Bryson DeChambeau. Big names, no surprise there at all. But tied with DeChambeau for second place is Corey Conners, not a name that casual fans of the PGA Tour may know.
Conners is a native of Listowel, Ontario, Canada and is in his third year on the PGA Tour. His rookie season was 2018 when he started 28 events, made 20 cuts and finished 130th in the FedEx Cup standings. His best result was a tie for Fort Worth Invitational.

Last season, Conners got his first PGA Tour victory, firing a 66 on Sunday to win the Valero Texas Open. That was one of his four top 10 finishes last season, along with a runner-up at the Sanderson Farms Championship and a tie for third at the Sony Open in Hawaii.
This season, Conners has made 13 starts and made the cut on nine occasions. He has only one top 10 so far, a tie for sixth place at the Zozo Championship. He’s currently in 46th in the FedEx Cup standings.
Conners got off to a fast start on Friday
Starting on the back nine, he birdied the 10th and 11th holes to quickly get to 2-under par on his round.
After three consecutive pars, Conners birdied numbers 15, 16 and 17 to move to 5-under on his round. A par on the 18th hole gave him a 30 on his first nine holes.
After a par on number one, Conners birdied the second hole, moving to 6-under par. Two more pars followed, then birdies on five and six, moving him to 8-under par on the day. Conners finished with three straight pars to shoot an 8-under par 63.
This is the second straight week that Conners has been on the leaderboard. He was 10-under through three rounds last week at the Charles Schwab Challenge, trailing Xander Schauffele by four shots with one round remaining. However, a final round 71 left him in a tie for 19th place.
Conners finds himself in the mix with two of the hottest players on tour this season, Simpson and DeChambeau. The Canadian will have his work cut out for him as the weekend moves forward. In addition to those two players, other big names are lurking on the RBC Heritage leaderboard.
If Conners can have a big weekend and earn his second PGA Tour win, it will be a surprise to some. But Conners is hot right now and he should be in the mix until the end at Harbour Town.
