Webb Simpson won at the RBC Heritage on Sunday, his second win on the PGA Tour this season. Simpson is now the hottest player on tour

Within the span of a week, Webb Simpson has seen his fortunes on the PGA Tour completely change. Simpson missed the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge last week in Fort Worth, only to turn around this week and win at the RBC Heritage.

Suddenly, Simpson went from player on the verge of competing for the FedEx Cup to the leader in the FedEx Cup standings. My, how fortunes can change quickly on the tour.

Simpson was in the mix all week at Harbour Town, a place where he has had success in the past without winning, until now. Simpson opened on Thursday with a 6-under par 65 and he shot the same score on Friday.

He slipped back a bit with a 3-under par 68 on Saturday, finding himself tied for the lead with 18 holes to play. And on Sunday, Simpson stepped up with a big round to clinch the title.

The round didn’t get off to a flying start for Simpson

He parred the first hole, then birdied the par-5 second hole to move to 1-under on the day. After pars on numbers three and four, he birdied the other par-5 on the front side, the fifth hole, to move to 2-under par.

However, there were no more birdies on the front side, leaving Simpson with a 2-under par 34 on the front side. That left him at 17-under par for the tournament and he found himself trailing the leaders with nine holes to play.

That’s when Simpson turned it up a notch. After pars at numbers 10 and 11, he was able to record consecutive birdies on the 12th and 13th holes to get to 19-under par.

After a par on number 14, Simpson went on what turned out to be the tournament-winning stretch of birdie holes. It started with a birdie on the par-5 15th hole, followed by birdies on 16 and 17. That put him at 22-under par and in the lead with one hole to play.

On 18, he did exactly what he needed to do, hitting the fairway and the green in regulation. Two putts from just over 30 feet clinched the tournament for Simpson.

This is the second win on the season for the 34-year-old, who claimed the title at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in February. It’s also the fifth top 10 in seven starts this season for Simpson, who has been perhaps the most consistent player on tour this season.

With the win, he moves into first place in the FedEx Cup standings, replacing Sungjae Im at the top. And if he continues to play the way he’s playing right now, there’s no reason he won’t be in the mix for the cup at the end of the season.
