Justin Thomas has been close to winning the last two weeks on the PGA Tour. Can he get over the hump and win at the Travelers Championship?

Justin Thomas has been close to winning on the PGA Tour each of the last two weeks. If not for one over-par round at both the Charles Schwab Challenge and at the RBC Heritage, Thomas could have won one or both of those tournaments. This week at the Travelers Championship, he will try again.

At the Schwab, Thomas was in contention until Sunday, when he shot a 1-over par 71 to slip back on the leaderboard. Still, the Kentucky native finished in a tie for 10th place.

Last week at the RBC Heritage, it was the first round that cost Thomas a shot at the title. A 1-over par 72 in the first round left Thomas in a tie for 101st place after 18 holes. However, he rallied to shoot 66 on Friday, 66 again on Saturday, then a sparkling 8-under par on Sunday briefly gave Thomas the lead on Sunday afternoon.

Since the tour resumed, Thomas has been, along with Daniel Berger, the most consistent player on tour. Now, it’s his time to step forward and actually close the deal.

Thomas does have experience at the TPC River Highlands course. He was 36th last season and 56th in 2018. He did miss the cut in 2017, but that followed his best result which came when Thomas tied for third in the Travelers in 2016. Thomas also missed the cut in 2015.

The field at this week’s event will be grueling once again, with Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau and three-time Travelers champion Bubba Watson all participating. That makes the challenge for Thomas just that much tougher.

However, Thomas has proven that he is up to any challenge that’s presented to him. So far this season, Thomas has played in 10 events and made eight cuts. He has seven top 10 finishes, including a pair of wins.

He claimed the title at the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges in October and also won the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January. In addition to the two wins, Thomas tied for third at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and tied for sixth at the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship in February.

Now, Thomas will go for what would be a tour-leading third victory this season as he once again takes on TPC River Highlands. Look for Thomas to avoid the bad round this week and earn that third victory this season and 13th in his brief PGA Tour career.
