When the Travelers Championship turned to the weekend, Phil Mickelson started to fall apart.

It looked like Phil Mickelson was going to be able to add another win to his long and storied career. At 50, wins are coming less and less often for Phil, but it looked like he was going to get one at the Travelers Championship. Instead, he fell apart as he made the turn into the weekend.

It wasn’t just that Phil was in contention after the second round. He was actually in the lead, sitting at -13. If he could play decent, mistake-free golf throughout the weekend, he was going to have a chance to win.

Instead, he found himself six shots back by the end of the third round after posting one of the worst scores of the day at +1. There were only nine players who shot worse than Lefty, with none of them being anywhere near contention.

Simply put, Phil Mickelson fell apart at the Travelers Championship.

Scoring was happening everywhere on the third day. Dustin Johnson and Brendon Todd actually each shot ten strokes better than Phil, each posting a 61. 16 players in total shot 66 or better.

Maybe a strong round Sunday could’ve salvaged his week a bit. Instead, he came out and struggled once again, being one of the 10-15 players that would end up shooting worse than even for the day.

You have to wonder, at Phil’s age, if competing with the big guns takes too much out of him to compete for an entire week. Yes, he scored great on Friday when he was playing with Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy. However, it sure seems like it took a whole heck of a lot out of him, likely being the reason he wasn’t able to contend at any point over the weekend.

With Phil’s round finally in the books, and the tournament yet to finish, it sure seems as if the PGA Tour has passed Phil by.
