Bryson DeChambeau has had a great restart to the PGA Tour season. Can he get over the hump and win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic?

The field for this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic, the fourth tournament since the PGA Tour resumed it schedule, is not loaded like the three previous events have been. However, there is one notable exception – Bryson DeChambeau.

DeChambeau has been as hot as anyone on tour since play resumed three weeks ago. Need proof? How about a tie for third at the Charles Schwab Challenge, a tie for eighth at the RBC Heritage and a tie for sixth at the Travelers Championship. That’s three top 10s in three weeks. An impressive stretch of play for sure.

And the results are very impressive, certainly, but so is the way DeChambeau is doing it. He has been bombing it off the tee, impressing everyone, including his fellow pros. And while hitting the long ball isn’t everything, it certainly doesn’t hurt.

DeChambeau has made a habit of finishing in the top 10 this season

He has started 10 times and made nine cuts on the PGA Tour this season. In those nine made cuts, DeChambeau has finished in the top 10 on seven occasions.

Amazingly, he missed the cut in his first event of this season, at the Military Tribute at the Greenbrier. Since then, he has been on fire.

His best finish of the season came when he was runner-up at the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship in February. His tie for third at the Schwab is next, followed by a fourth place at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and a tie for fifth at the Genesis Invitational.

As he heads into this week, he has finished in the top 10 in his last six events. To put that into perspective, only Justin Thomas (seven times) has finished in the top 10 more times this season than DeChambeau has in his last six starts.

So heading into this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic, DeChambeau would clearly be one of the favorites no matter what. But when you factor in the fact that this is a weaker field than what he has faced the past two weeks, it makes the 26-year-old even more of a favorite.

DeChambeau has been criticized in the past for his slow play although that has not been much of an issue the past three weeks. But when you take fewer shots than your competitors, those criticisms usually go away.

As he should be, DeChambeau will be an overwhelming favorite to win this week. And a win is the only thing missing from his 2020 resume.
