Just one week after contending on the PGA Tour, Scott Stallings is at it again this week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic

Scott Stallings continued his surge on the PGA Tour on Thursday. One week after registering his first top 10 of the season, Stallings had an opening round 7-under par 65 in the opening round of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, leaving him in a tie for the lead after 18 holes of play.

Last week, Stallings went 64-67 on the weekend to finish in a tie for sixth at the Travelers Championship. That top 10 allowed him to move from 161st to 119th in the FedEx Cup standings. And his hot trend continued on Thursday.

It was an erratic start for Stallings on Thursday. He birdied the first hole, followed by a bogey on number two. However, he bounced back with a birdie on three and took off from there.

He parred three straight, on four, five and six before consecutive birdies on seven and eight got him to 3-under par. He recorded a par on the ninth hole for a 3-under par 33 on his front nine.

Stallings opened his back nine with pars on numbers 10 and 11. He birdied the par-4 12th hole before two more pars on 13 and 14.

That’s when things really got going for Stallings

He birdied the par-3 15th hole and parred the 16th. He finished his round with birdies on 17 and 18 to complete a 4-under par back nine and a round of 65.

Stallings has played in 14 events on tour this season and has made 10 cuts. However, he has lower finishes in all but two of those events. In addition to the Travelers last week, his only other top 25 was at the Bermuda Championship in November, where he tied for 18th place.

The 35-year-old Stallings is currently 304th in the Official World Golf Rankings. However, he has had previous success on the PGA Tour.

He has won three times on tour. His first came at the 2011 Greenbrier Classic. He won again the next season, claiming the title at the True South Classic. His last win was in 2014 at the Farmers Insurance Open.

In his nine previous seasons on tour, Stallings has made the FedEx Cup playoffs seven times, only missing in 2015 and 2016. He finished in 109th place last season.

Stallings continues to surge at just the right time. If he can continue to trend in this direction, the playoffs are guaranteed. But there’s still a lot of golf to be played, even this week.
