Workday Charity Open: Top 10 power rankings at Muirfield Village
I can’t imagine Gary Woodland’s made the TV broadcast too much at the Memorial Tournament. With that said, he’s quietly got a solid resume at Muirfield Village with seven made cuts in nine tries and four top-25s. His best result, however, was only a T-4th in 2016 (68-65-69-73) where he finished two shots astray.
He hasn’t MC’d here since 2015, and will be glad to arrive to a venue more favorable to his power game. The former Kansas Jayhawk has a steady season going in 2019-2020 after he faded in 2018-19 after winning the US Open.
He’s made five of seven cuts this season and has six top-10s in 12 total starts. In June and July, he’s made two of three cuts highlighted by solo ninth at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
The 36-year-old is on pace for a career best season approaching the green. Woodland is ninth in that strokes gained category (.798) and sixth in greens in regulation (72.5%).
Low scores could be destiny again for the field this week. If so, that’s fine for the four-time Tour winner, who sits in 12th in birdie average (4.35). Any time he gets four cracks at a par-5 is good, too, as he ranks 10th with a 4.49 scoring average. Woodland didn’t play in the par-72 Rocket Mortgage Classic and the first three PGA Tour venues after the COVID-19 hiatus were par-70 or 71.
“This place is perfect,” Woodland was quoted by ASAP Sports in 2016. “The golf course is as good a condition as we see all year. The greens are ideal. The golf course is in front of you, so I don’t think there’s a lot of knowledge. You’ve just got to hit good shots.”
