When Kevin Streelman makes the cut on the PGA Tour this season, he contends. Can he do it again at the Workday Charity Open?

While more popular names appear on the leaderboard at the PGA Tour stop this week, the Workday Charity Open, there might be no player more dangerous this weekend than Kevin Streelman.

Seriously? With Hideki Matsuyama, Collin Morikawa, Ian Poulter, Patrick Reed and Justin Thomas all in the hunt, how could Streelman be the most dangerous?

Streelman is currently ranked 50th in the Official World Golf Rankings, but prior to this week, he was 19th in the FedEx Cup standings. It has been a feast or famine season for the graduate of Duke University.

He has entered 18 events this season and this week will mark the eighth time that he has made the cut this season. What that means is that when Streelman has been good, he’s been very good. And when he’s been bad, he’s been pretty bad.

For example, in the seven events in which Streelman had made the cut this season prior to this week, he has four top 25 finishes, three top 10s, three top fives and a pair of runner-up showings. That’s making the most of your opportunities.

Streelman was second two weeks ago at the Travelers Championship, falling just short of Dustin Johnson in Connecticut

And in February, Streelman was second at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, coming up four shots short of Nick Taylor in California.

His other top five came when Streelman tied for fourth at the Sanderson Farms Championship in February. That’s three top fives just this year for the 41-year-old Streelman.

The PGA Tour is nothing new to the veteran, who has been on tour since 2008. Streelman has won twice on tour, claiming victories at the Tampa Bay Championship in 2013 and at the Travelers Championship in 2014.

Streelman opened play at this week’s Workday Charity Open by shooting a 2-under par 70, leaving him five shots off the day one lead. However, he was much better in round two.

Starting on the back side, Streelman parred the 10th hole before a birdie on number 11. He parred the 12th hole, then birdied the 13th to move to 2-under on his round.

That was only the beginning for the veteran. After a par on 14, he would birdie both the 15th and 16th holes to get to 4-under par on the day. After a par on 17, he birdied the 18th to shoot a 5-under par 31 on his first nine.

Streelman stayed hot on his back nine. He opened with a birdie on the first hole to get to 6-under on his round. He would par numbers two, three and four before getting hot.

That streak started with a birdie on the fifth hole, followed by another on the sixth and one more on the seventh. At that point, Streelman found himself at 9-under on his round and within two shots of the lead.

His only blemish came on the eighth hole, when a poor pitch shot left him with a long par putt. That putt missed, resulting in Streelman’s only bogey of the day.

Entering Saturday, Streelman will start three shots behind Morikawa. But the way the veteran has played this season, he will likely be in the mix all weekend long.
