PGA Tour: Justin Thomas on verge of title at Workday Charity Open
By Tim Letcher
After a solid round on Saturday at the Workday Charity Open, Justin Thomas is on the verge of his 13th PGA Tour win
Justin Thomas decided that Saturday was his day to make a move at the Workday Charity Open. And by the time his move was over, Thomas found himself in the lead and in position for his 13th career PGA Tour victory.
Thomas entered the week in second place in the FedEx Cup standings and is threatening to take the lead after his big round on Saturday. He entered Saturday’s round three shots behind 36-hole leader Collin Morikawa but, at one point on Saturday, Thomas himself had a three-shot lead of his own.

Saturday’s round did not start spectacularly for the Louisville, Kentucky, native. He recorded pars on each of the first four holes before he got things going in the right direction.
Once he got hot, he took advantage of his opportunities. And that included three straight birdies at the fifth, sixth and seventh holes that moved him to 3-under on the day and into the tournament lead.
Thomas closed his front nine with pars on the final two holes. His 3-under par 33 pushed him to lead, still with nine holes to play.
As he started the back nine, Thomas stayed steady
He parred the 10th hole before recording a birdie on the par-5 11th. That birdie moved him to 4-under par on his Saturday round.
Thomas then parred the 12th and 13th holes before back-to-back birdies at 14 and 15 got him to 6-under par. He would par the final three holes to shoot a 6-under par 66 on Saturday.
After shooting 68-66 in the first two rounds, Thomas’ 66 on Saturday gives him a 16-under total and a two-shot advantage over Viktor Hovland (-14) with 18 holes to play. Morikawa is the only other player within striking distance after his even-par round of 72 left him at 13-under for the tournament.
Since the tour restarted after the three-month coronavirus hiatus, Thomas has had a mixed bag of results. He tied for 10th at the Charles Schwab Challenge after contending until Sunday. He finished in a tie for eighth at the RBC Heritage, rallying from a poor first round into contention with a 63 on Sunday. And he missed the cut at the Travelers Championship after consecutive rounds of 1-over par 71 at TPC River Highlands.
Overall, the season has been a very good one for Thomas. He already has two wins, claiming titles at the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges and as the Sentry Tournament of Champions.
On Sunday, he will try to become the first three-time winner on tour this season. And unless Thomas does something to beat himself, he will hold off the field and claim yet another PGA Tour win.
