PGA Tour: Muirfield Village set to host events in consecutive weeks

This week, the PGA Tour will see something that has not happened in over 60 years. That’s because Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, will host a PGA Tour event for the second consecutive week.
Muirfield is hosting its traditional event, the Memorial Tournament, this week, as it has done every year since 1976. The event usually takes place in the first week of June but was moved this season after the PGA Tour was forced to shuffle its schedule due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking of the pandemic, that’s how we got to this place in the schedule where Muirfield will be hosting events in consecutive weeks. When the John Deere Classic, which was slotted last week on the PGA Tour schedule, was not able to be played due to the pandemic restrictions in the state of Illinois, it was Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson and Muirfield Village Golf Club that stepped up to fill the void.
The resulting event was the Workday Charity Open, which ended yesterday with Collin Morikawa earning a victory on the third hole of a sudden death playoff over Justin Thomas. The event was a success, largely due to Nicklaus and the people at Muirfield Village.
Now, Nicklaus will be front and center as he hosts his annual celebration of golf in Central Ohio
Patrick Cantlay returns as the defending champion and five-time champion Tiger Woods will be in the field at the Memorial Tournament.
So, that’s how we got to the point where Muirfield hosted two events in a row. But what about the last time it happened?
That was in August of 1957 when the Tam O’Shanter Golf Club in Niles, Illinois did the same thing. First, the course hosted the All-American Open, which was won by Roberto De Vicenzo. The following week, Dick Mayer won the World Championship of Golf, also at Tam O’Shanter.
Until this week, that was the last time the PGA Tour played on the same course in consecutive weeks. In the history of the tour, it has only happened 11 times.
Muirfield Village is doing its part to set the two events apart, since there will be many players who are playing on the same course in consecutive weeks. Everything from course setup, length of the rough, speed of the greens and pin placements have been taken into consideration as Muirfield hosts for the second straight week.
Seeing the tour playing at the same course two weeks in a row may seem odd. But it’s 2020 and as this calendar year has proven, there’s no such thing as normal at this point in the world.
