PGA Tour: can Matthew Wolff repeat as champ at 3M Open?
By Tim Letcher
Matthew Wolff earned his first PGA Tour win last season at the 3M Open. What are the odds he can repeat when the tournament takes place again?
Matthew Wolff returns to the site of his first (and, to this point, only) PGA Tour win this week when the 3M Open takes place at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota.
Last season was the first year for the 3M Open, meaning Wolff is the only champion the event has ever had. He’s back this week, becoming the first person to ever defend his 3M Open title.

Wolff earned that win last year in just his third event as a professional. And he did it in style, making a hero putt for the win on the 72nd hole
At just 20 years old, Wolff came to the final hole knowing he needed to do something special. And he was able to pull that off. Playing the par-5 18th hole, Wolff was able to hit the green with his second shot, leaving himself a lengthy eagle putt.
Wolff sank that putt, then had to wait to see if it would be enough. And when Collin Morikawa’s eagle putt from basically the same distance missed, Wolff claimed a one-shot win over Morikawa and Bryson DeChambeau.
Had it not been for a big Saturday, Wolff might have never been in the position he was. The former Oklahoma State Cowboy found himself trailing DeChambeau by six shots after 36 holes. But Wolff made up all of that ground with a 9-under par 62 on Saturday, allowing him to pull into a tie with DeChambeau and Morikawa with 18 holes to play.
This season, Wolff has played in 16 events and has made 11 cuts. He has six top 25 finishes, including his only top 10 this year, which came three weeks ago at the Rocket Mortgage Classic when he was solo second.
Wolff will face a much different field this year than what he faced last year. In this week’s field in Minnesota are Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau, among others. That’s quite a bit more firepower than last year’s version of this event drew.
Still just 21 years old, Wolff will be looking to earn consecutive victories in Minnesota this week. If he can keep himself in the mix, he could contend. But it doesn’t seen likely that Wolff will be able to defend his title. It says here that Wolff will finish inside the top 20 but he certainly will not win for the second straight season at the 3M Open.
