Which Dustin Johnson will show up this week at the 3M Open? The 21-time PGA Tour winner or the guy who shot 80-80 last week at the Memorial Tournament?

Dustin Johnson is one of the best players on the PGA Tour when he’s right. We have seen Johnson be very good and we’ve seen him be not so good. So which DJ will show up at this week’s 3M Open?

It’s like the Eminem song from 20 years ago. Will the real Dustin Johnson please stand up? And please, don’t call him Slim Shady.

Just look at Johnson’s results over the past four months. Our first view of him was at the TaylorMade Driving Relief event at Seminole Golf Club in Florida. DJ partnered with Rory McIlroy to beat Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff.

The reality was that McIlroy carried DJ for 18 holes in that event. Johnson looked like a guy who had not touched a golf club in months, which he hadn’t.

When the PGA Tour resumed at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Johnson was in the field but he didn’t last long. Consecutive rounds of 71 left him outside the cut line.

The next week, Johnson took his talents to Harbour Town Golf Links for the RBC Heritage. DJ was much better in that event, with four straight rounds in the 60s, leaving him at 15-under par for the week. He tied for 17th place overall, quite an improvement.

Just one week later, Johnson took the next step. At the Travelers Championship, he used rounds of 64 on Friday and 61 on Saturday to earn his 21st PGA Tour victory. Johnson was fantastic all week, showing not only the power he is known for, but also a deft touch on, and around, the greens.

It was only natural to assume that the real DJ was back at that point. After playing three straight weeks, Johnson took the next two tournaments off, another logical step.

So when DJ showed up at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, last week for the Memorial Tournament, he figured to be among the favorites to win. After all, he came into the event in solid form and he had experienced some success in that particular event before.

However, it was much the opposite for the 36-year-old Johnson. He opened with a round of 80 on Thursday and followed that with a matching round of 80 on Friday. He missed the cut by 13 shots and was simply an afterthought as Jon Rahm won the title.

So as Johnson tees it up this week at the 3M Open in Minnesota, which DJ will show up? The guess here is that he will want to bounce back in a big way in response to his poor play from last week. Look for a top 10 finish from Johnson this week.
