3M Open: Could last years surprise contenders win the 2020 edition?
We’ve all heard of the top of the players who finished at the top of the leaderboard last year at the 3M Open. For 2020, could any of the contenders below them take this year’s edition?
Matthew Wolff. Bryson DeChambeau. Collin Morikawa. Two youngsters and the hulk, all household names, took the top three spots on the leaderboard at last year’s edition of the 3M Open. For 2020, we look to see if any of the contenders that finished below them have a shot at taking home the win this year.
Neither Adam Hadwin nor Carlos Ortiz, 4th and 5th last year, respectively, are in this year’s field. The next few players are though, which include Wyndham Clark, Lucas Glover, and Sam Burns. They aren’t the only players in the top ten returning, but they are the ones we are focusing on today. Apologies to Harmon, Gerber, Merritt, and Matsuyama.
Could last year’s lesser-known contenders make a run at this year’s 3M Open? I say yes.

Wyndham Clark has been one of the better putters this year. When you pair that with his length off of the tee, it’s a combo that could suit the bombers paradise that is TPC Twin Cities to Clark’s game. When he is able to put it together, he is capable of making a run, as evidenced by his three-week stretch earlier this season where he finished T-18th, T-17th, T-11th.
Lucas Glover is likely the best known of the three who highlight this group. For a forty-year-old, he is still mashing it off the tee, ranking not just 53rd in distance, but also 49th in accuracy. The combination of length and accuracy could get him plenty of good looks this week at the 3M Open.
Lastly, we look at the youngest of the group, Sam Burns. Known for his length off of the tee, Burns is actually 10th this season, averaging 311.1 yards. If not for a third-round 72 last year, he would’ve been right there alongside Wolff and gang. With course knowledge and plenty of length at his disposal, Burns could be the one in the group that makes a push once again.
There are plenty of big names at the event, some of them bombers in their own right. With golf being one of the hardest things to predict in sports, why not go for some of last year’s contenders. One of them is going to make a run again this year, so we might as well root for one of these three players to take down the 3M Open.
