Matthew Wolff is looking for his second PGA Tour win. But with prime scoring conditions at the 3M Open on Saturday, he failed to take advantage

Scoring conditions were ideal at the 3M Open on Saturday, with nearly every player finding a way to get under par. Some of the PGA Tour pros were way under par. But Matthew Wolff was unable to take advantage of the situation and he now finds himself in need of a huge day on Sunday if he is to defend his title from last season.

There were a ton of low scores on Saturday as scoring conditions, and the course setup, were ideal. Cameron Tringale shot a 8-under par 63 and there were a number of 64s on the course at TPC Twin Cities on this day. But Wolff could not take advantage.

The round started poorly for Wolff who found the greenside bunker with his second shot on the first hole and was unable to get up and down. The result was a bogey, dropping a shot just one hole in.

Wolff would par the second and third holes but he found trouble again at the fourth hole. His tee shot found the water and after a drop, he was able to get up and down but not before his second bogey of the day dropped him to 2-over for the day and 7-under for the event.

After a par at the fifth hole, Wolff finally made a birdie when he took advantage of the par-5 sixth hole. His birdie left him at 1-over for the day. After pars at the next three holes, that’s where Wolff finished the front nine.

The back nine started with four straight pars before Wolff got something going. That happened on the 14th hole when Wolff hit his second shot to about nine feet and then made the putt for his second birdie of the day.

On the 15th hole, Wolff was at it again. His second shot on the par four left him just about four feet for birdie. He was able to make that putt and get under par for the first time on Saturday.

Wolff was unable to take advantage of the short par-4 16th hole, which was costly for him.

His drive was just short of the green and his pitch left him a makeable birdie putt. However, the putt slid by to the right and Wolff settled for a disappointing par.

On 17, Wolff had about 15 feet for birdie, and that one slid by to the left, leaving him a tap in for par and leaving him a 1-under on his Saturday round. And on 18, he was next to the green in two shots but took three to get in, making a par.

Wolff started the day three shots behind leaders Michael Thompson and Richy Werenski. By the time the dust had settled Saturday, Wolff was five shots behind Thompson and Richy Weresnki and in a tie for 13th place.

If Wolff is to repeat at the 3M Open, he will need something really special to happen on Sunday. He’s done it before, but it will definitely be a huge task for the talented youngster.
