We are just over a week from the first major of 2020. After the 3M Open, it’s time to take a look at the FedEx Cup Standings.

From recent surprise winners like Michael Thompson to favorites who win an event like Jon Rahm, both can have big implications on the FedEx Cup standings.

Take a look at Rahm. A win for someone in his position is huge. Remember, the top 30 in the standings make it to the Tour Championship. It’s the third and final playoff event. His win vaulted him from right around that mark of 30 to a top ten ranking, as he comes in at eighth currently in the FedEx Cup standings.

Meanwhile, for the longshots, a win can make even more of a difference. Before the 3M Open, Michael Thompson wasn’t even eligible for the FedEx Cup playoffs. Sitting at 151st in the rankings, he needed a strong stretch of golf, or a win, to get into the race. A win did just that, moving up over 100 spots! He now sits at 39th and is pretty comfortably into the second stage of the playoffs.

The man who finished right behind Thompson this past week, Adam Long, received a nice boost as well. He lept from 43rd to 20th, showing that 300 points for second place isn’t too shabby.

A handful of the players who made noise over this past weekend saw a nice increase in their rankings as well. Richy Werenski went from 95th to 70th, putting him at the cut line for moving on from the first playoff event. Cameron Tringale is fairly close behind him, moving from 101st to 74th.

Everyone’s favorite Twitter follow, Max Homa, jumped a solid 16 places after his T-3rd finish, and he now sits at 50th in the rankings.

Other than Rahm two weeks ago, there wasn’t much of a change at the top of the leaderboard. In fact, the top 19 players all stayed the same. Things will change this week at the St. Jude, as there is a multitude of talent, and there is bound to be some movement amidst the eventual Tour Championship contenders.

Current leader Justin Thomas holds a solid 229 point lead over Webb Simpson. Both are in play this week, and we are on our way to another great week of golf.
