FedEx Cup on the Bubble: can Zach Johnson make playoffs?
By Tim Letcher
Zach Johnson is one of the big names outside the current FedEx Cup standings. Can the veteran do enough this week to get into the postseason?
This week’s PGA Tour stop, the Wyndham Championship, is the last chance for players to earn points to qualify for the 2020 FedEx Cup playoffs. There are a number of big names on the outside looking in at the playoffs, including two-time major champion Zach Johnson.
Now 44 years old, Johnson has had one of his least productive seasons on tour this year. He has made the cut in 10 of his 16 starts, but only has three top 25 finishes and no top 10s.

Johnson’s best finish of the season came in late June at the Travelers Championship. There, he shot four rounds in the 60s and finished in a tie for 11th.
The Iowa native tied for 14th at the Sanderson Farms Championship in September and tied for 23rd at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in November. With those results, Johnson finds himself in 129th place in the FedEx Cup standings. He will need to find a way to climb four spots this week if he wants to get into the playoffs.
He’s not exactly entering the Wyndham on a high note. After his high placement at the Travelers, Johnson tied for 31st at the Workday Charity Open and tied for 58th at the Memorial Tournament.
Last week at the PGA Championship, Johnson appeared to have turned a corner. He shot a 4-under par 66 in the first round and found himself on the leaderboard in a major championship. However, he quickly came crashing back to Earth on Friday, shooting a 6-over par 76 and missing the cut.
The former Masters (2007) and Open Championship (2015) winner now must find a way to contend at the Wyndham Championship this week or he will miss the playoffs for the second straight season. That, after he made the playoffs in each of the previous 12 seasons on tour.
Johnson, a 12-time winner on tour, needs to find a way to accumulate enough points just to get into the playoffs, which may be difficult. In this same event last year, Johnson made the cut, but tied for 53rd overall.
That type of finish will not be good enough for Johnson this week. And the guess here is that the veteran will not have enough game to finish high enough to make the playoffs once again this season.
