With only one regular-season event left, we look at someone outside the cut line in Sergio Garcia.

There are plenty of things in golf that I love. When it comes to the FedEx Cup, there is one more thing that I love. The fact that Sergio Garcia is currently outside of the top 125.

I’ve always let it be known, loudly and proudly, that I do no like Sergio Garcia. The man has been a professional golfer for over half of his life, and he still is less mature than the majority of high school golfers that I see every spring while coaching.

From spitting in cups, to inappropriate remarks about his competitors, to temper tantrums both in bunkers and on tee boxes.

That’s why when I went to check what the bottom of the standings looked like, I was overjoyed to see that Sergio is a few spots out, around 10 spots and 30 points back of the 125th ranked golfer.

He is playing this week as he looks to get those 30 points, and that is a minimum of what he needs. To put it in perspective, he will need to finish around T-25th to T-30th to get that many points, dependant upon tiebreakers.

He will likely want to get into 15th or so to better his odds, which would get him 55 points or so.

Every week when I tune in (is that still something that is said?), I have a handful of players that I’m watching that I hope to do well. Underdogs, Max Homa, anyone Irish, Jim Furyk, and a handful of other occurrences.

There is one more thing that I can add to the list this week. Hoping that Sergio Garcia misses the cut, thus eliminating him from the FedEx Cup playoffs. Even if he does make the cut, I will be rooting for him to finish outside the top 35, and still not make it.

Not everyone agrees with rooting against people. I think when it comes down to Sergio Garcia, that it is completely acceptable. He’s given no reason to root for him, shown no remorse for his actions, and he isn’t a role model. My son acts like Sergio on occasion…but he is four, so it’s understandable.

As you watch the Wyndham this week/weekend, root for whoever you want, as long as you do one thing. Root against Sergio Garcia.
