Brooks Koepka was forced to withdraw from the Northern Trust on Wednesday due to a lingering hip injury. Thus, his season has come to an end.

Four-time major champion Brooks Koepka saw his 2020 season end with a thud when he withdrew from the Northern Trust on Wednesday due to an injury. For Koepka, this week was much like the rest of his PGA Tour season – disappointing.

Koepka’s season is now over because he will not be among the top 70 players heading into next week’s BMW Championship. Koepka is 97th in the FedEx Cup standings prior to this week’s play in Boston.

Koepka was clearly battling a hip injury two weeks ago at the PGA Championship in San Francisco. On multiple occasions during that event, he had athletic trainers helping him stretch out the hip on the course.

Last week, Koepka shot 72-70 at the Wyndham Championship and missed the cut. After his early exit, Koepka did confirm that the hip was still a bother to him.

The 2020 season will not be one that Koepka remembers fondly. He played in 13 events and made eight cuts. However, he had only two top 10 finishes this season. His best result came earlier this month when he finished second to Justin Thomas at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, where he was defending his title.

That week seemed to be setting the stage for a potential three-peat by Koepka at the PGA Championship. And the two-time defending champ was in the mix until a terrible round on Sunday left him in a tie for 29th place, well back of winner Collin Morikawa.

Some saw Koepka’s downfall at the PGA Championship as karma after he trash talked Dustin Johnson prior to the final round of the event.

Koepka indicated that he was the one who would come through in the clutch and Johnson would not. However, turns out that it was a 23-year-old Morikawa that showed up the rest of the field to win his first major on Sunday.

After winning three times last season, including his fourth major title at the PGA Championship, Koepka did not win a single event in the 2020 season. This was the first time since 2016 that Koepka did not win on the tour.

Koepka is still just 30 years old and his lack of success this season will largely be attributed to injury. However, if he’s not better next season and continues to struggle, there will be serious questions about his game going forward.
