The 10 players who have delivered the most consistent performances since the PGA Tour’s mid-June return

The PGA Tour has just completed perhaps the most unusual stretch of tournaments in its lengthy history…the restart following a three-month mid-season Covid break.

Which players have performed the most consistently across that unusual stretch?

Completion of the Wyndham last weekend marked the 10th tournament played since the mid-June restart. With only a few exceptions, those tournaments went off without a hitch. All were completed on time, the most unfortunate aspect being the absence of spectators.

Nine different players emerged with victories, only one – Collin Morikawa – winning twice. For the most part, the tournament’s cream rose to the top during the restart. Of the nine champions, seven ranked among the top 15 in FedEx Cup points.

The only two surprise winners were Michael Thompson at the 3M and Jim Herman at last week’s Wyndham.

But which players were most consistent during this 10-game stretch? To measure that, we’ve looked at the performance of all players in those 10 tournaments. Each player’s showing was rated based on the average standard deviation of his performance relative to the field in the 10 events.

There are two qualifiers: a player had to compete in a minimum of five tournaments to be rated, and he could not miss more than one cut.

This rating doesn’t consider the high points of a player’s season. Four of the 10 tournament champions are not among the top 10. Instead, it considers the week-to-week consistency of their work. The best players in this June-to-August rating are the ones who avoided poor showings while consistently contending.

Because low scores are better in golf, the more negative the average  of a player’s performance is, the better he has played. Here’s the list.
