The Northern Trust: Tiger Woods stays within striking distance
By Tim Letcher
Tiger Woods stayed within striking distance at the Northern Trust on Thursday at TPC Boston. A few mistakes kept him from an even better score in round one.
Tiger Woods got his game going on the back nine on Thursday at the Northern Trust in time to mount a rally and to stay within shouting distance of the lead.
It did not start off in the greatest of fashion for Woods on Thursday at TPC Boston. Playing the back nine first, Woods opened with pars on the 10th, 11th and 12th holes. Then on the 13th hole, he got into some trouble off the tee, was unable to get out of the rough and ultimately made a bogey on the par four.

Then it was four more pars in a row, and Woods remained at 1-over par on his round. He finally broke through on the par-5 18th hole when he hit the green in two. He lagged his putt to about three feet, then made his putt for birdie. The result was an even-par 35 on his first nine.
The second nine did not start that well for Woods either. He parred the first hole, then had a par on the easy par-5 second hole, missing a chance to get under par after hitting his drive in a fairway bunker.
Woods bounced back on the next two holes.
On the par-3 third hole, his tee shot left him about 16 feet for birdie, a putt that he made to get under par for the first time on the day. That momentum carried over to the next hole. At the short par-4 fourth hole, the Big Cat got up and down from the greenside bunker for his second consecutive birdie.
On the par-4 fifth hole, Woods was in a bunker and the rough, but made a five-footer for par. On the sixth hole, Woods hit the green in two, but was over 50 feet from the hole. He was able to get down in two for another par, remaining 2-under on the day.
Next came the par-5 seventh hole, and Woods hit the green in regulation and made his six-foot putt for birdie to get to three under on his round. Then on the par-3 eighth hole, Woods stuck his tee shot about six feet away and he made another putt to get to 4-under.
However, on his final hole, Woods found trouble off the tee and was unable to escape unscathed. He would suffer a bogey to close his round at 3-under par.
Woods finds himself four shots behind a quartet of leaders after 18 holes. For Woods, he has plenty to build on after day one, but needs to keep himself out of the type of trouble he found on Thursday if he wants to climb the leaderboard on Friday.
