Needing a special week at the Northern Trust, Louis Oosthuizen has had three rounds of very solid golf so far. To advance in the FedEx Cup playoffs, he’ll need one more.

Heading into this week’s Northern Trust, Louis Oosthuizen was in danger of not making it to the next round of the FedEx Cup playoffs. The South African sat in 99th place in the playoff standings prior to this week’s play, where only the top 70 players will make it to next week’s BMW Championship.

The former Open champion needed to make something special happen this week to move up at least 31 spots and to keep his postseason alive. And through three rounds at TPC Boston this week, that’s exactly what Oosthuizen has delivered.

He opened the event on Thursday with a 6-under par 65 and matched that with another 65 on Friday. He was in fourth place heading into play on Saturday.

Oosthuizen opened his Saturday round with a par on the first hole and followed it with a birdie on the par-5 second hole. After a par on the third hole, Oosthuizen found the rough on the fourth hole and was unable to get out. He hit the green in three and missed a nine-foot putt for par, suffering his first bogey of the round and falling to even par.

After a par on the fifth hole, Oosthuizen got back into red figures by chipping in for birdie at the sixth hole. He would par both the seventh and eighth holes before a bogey on the ninth hole left him at even par for his front nine.

Oosthuizen got the momentum going in his favor as he made the turn. He birdied both the 10th and 11th holes and suddenly he was 2-under on the day.

A par on the 12th hole was followed by another birdie, this one at the 13th hole, which left him at 3-under on his Saturday round.

However, on the 14th hole, Oosthuizen found the rough off the tee and was forced to pitch out. He missed the green with his second shot, then pitched to about 35 feet. He missed the putt and suffered another bogey, slipping back to 2-under.

He would par the 15th, 16th and 17th holes before closing his round with a birdie on the 18th hole. That left him with a round of 3-under par 68.

For the tournament, Oosthuizen is now 15-under par, seven shots behind 54-hole leader Dustin Johnson. However, his fourth-place standing has him up 63 spots in the playoff standings, projecting him to be in 36th place when the event ends.

Oosthuizen needed to make something special happen this week to advance in the playoffs. And with just 18 holes to play, he has done just that.
