Northern Trust: Dustin Johnson continues roller coaster season
By Tim Letcher
Dustin Johnson has been extremely hit or miss since the PGA Tour resumed in June. When he’s on, like he was this week at the Northern Trust, he’s unbeatable.
It’s hard to know what to call Dustin Johnson over the last two months. But, after dominating the field in Boston this week at the Northern Trust, you can once again call him a winner on the PGA Tour.
Johnson rode the wave of an 11-under par 60 on Friday to an easy victory on Sunday. He beat the field by whopping 11 shots, after carrying a five-shot lead into Sunday.

Since the PGA Tour resumed play in June, Johnson has seemingly been all over the map with his game. We saw him play at the TaylorMade Driving Relief event in May, where he partnered with Rory McIlroy to beat Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff. But DJ was less than himself that day for sure.
When the actual tour events started, Johnson missed the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth. He followed that with a T17 at the RBC Heritage. Then, the following week, he won at the Travelers Championship, his 21st career PGA Tour victory. Everything seemed back to normal for DJ.
After taking a couple of weeks off, DJ played at the Memorial Tournament in Ohio, where he promptly missed the cut. And in a bad way. He shot 80-80 to finish 16-over par. Yikes.
The following week at the 3M Open, he withdrew after a first-round 78, citing a back injury. Whatever the issue, his three rounds after his time off were 80-80-78. That did not seem like a player who was at the top of his game by any measure.
He did bounce right back, however. DJ was in the mix at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational before finishing T12 for the week. He shot four straight rounds in the 60s, quite an improvement from his previous events.
At the PGA Championship, DJ seemed poised to claim his second major championship before he was overtaken on Sunday by upstart Collin Morikawa. Johnson finished in a tie for second place at TPC Harding Park.
This week was a domination of the field. His Friday round was truly something to behold. He was 7-under par through five holes, shot a front-nine 27 and narrowly missed shooting 59. And when he came back with a 64 on Saturday, the tournament was essentially over.
Johnson now takes the lead in the FedEx Cup playoffs and is in position to win the cup for the first time. But with the way his season has gone, it’s hard to know whether he will be able to hang on to that lead or not.
