Golf News: Give me more ESPN and the great Scott Van Pelt

There are few things in the world of sports that I enjoy more than listening to Scott Van Pelt.

That’s exactly what we got a couple of weeks ago at Harding Park for the PGA Championship. Scott Van Pelt on the call for ESPN, back in his old stomping grounds calling golf.

The ability to mix dry humor, wit, and immense knowledge of the game isn’t something that a lot of people have.

Scott Van Pelt is able to do just that, and when I tuned in and realized that he was the one who was going to be covering (I think it was the featured holes) the event… I honestly can’t remember being that giddy in a long time.

Give me more Scott Van Pelt.

I rarely agree with the decisions that ESPN makes, or their ability to put the right people in the right places for the right amount of time. It should be fairly simple. Let Doris Burke do whatever game she wants, whenever she wants. Never let Booger McFarland talk about football again. Let Scott Van Pelt do golf whenever he wants.

He’s that good at it.

It may have been the best non Jim Nantz golf coverage that we have seen in quite some time. He has instant reliability to whoever he is covering/talking/announcing with. He can just talk to whoever is there, and it seems like they have been together forever.

Whether it is covering the GOAT, breaking down the incredibly packed leaderboard, or reacting life to a missed Justin Thomas putt… you’ve got to be flipping kidding me… Van Pelt is just one of the best.

I know that ESPN doesn’t get that much coverage of golf. Let’s go back to what we see sometimes in basketball, or even on network TV. Let people switch places once in a while. A CBS star shows up on an ABC show, and then a star from an ABC show shows up on some CBS show. Dick Vitale heads over to do an NBA game while Mark Jackson does a college game.

Let’s do the same thing with Scott Van Pelt. it’s probably a bit different since he hosts his late show on the Mothership, but why not make it interesting. Let him cover golf, and put Dan Hicks on the nightly show. Tirico would be the obvious choice… but come on! Tirico and Van Pelt together covering the Tour Championship? Hose me down.

If we can take one positive thing from 2020, let it be to have more Scott Van Pelt in the world of golf.
